David Bowie Young Americans DTS

Editor's note: This DTS disc was rumored last year...its finally out in the UK only...

Bowie_young_americans The zenith of David Bowie's flat-pack soul period, 1975's 'Young Americans' is an incredible and frequently overlooked record. No other Bowie album had spelled out its market so cleanly and crisply in its title. This was an album to be bought at a time when young Americans, after years of mobilising, now had a little disposable income and were ready to party. It was all, supposedly, about "emotional drive." But the album came to represent so much more than that. It is an indirect product of many factors; soul music; politics, both personal and public; sex, drugs and dancing; of downtown New York and uptown Philadelphia.

This special edition CD/DVD includes the original album with 3 bonus tracks one of which is previously unreleased, a brand new 5.1 mix by legendary producer Tony Visconti and 2 performances from The Dick Cavett TV show along with footage of Bowie being interviewed by Dick.

DTS Announces Promotion for Surround Music Titles

Agoura Hills, CA (June 29, 2006)--DTS, Inc. announced that it is reducing prices of all of its catalog of surround music titles, which are produced and distributed under the DTS Entertainment label. Beginning July 2006, DTS is offering all retailers significant product discounts to support the increase in proliferation of surround sound equipment in the home and car.

Based upon the success of a trial discount promotion this spring, the price reductions of up to 60 percent off of current retail prices will be ongoing.

In addition to the price reductions, DTS will support the new pricing with a targeted ad and marketing campaign to introduce the catalog to new listeners, and to encourage current consumers of surround music to take advantage of the discounts.

"With the increase in sales of home theater in-a-box systems, OEM-installed automotive surround sound systems, and PCs with multi-channel audio capabilities, DTS sees that surround music has become mainstream," said Molly Kronberg, vice president, worldwide strategic business development, content at DTS. "We believe that music lovers who appreciate the quality audio experience they get with DTS surround music titles will be very excited by this offer."

There are currently more than 100 DTS-encoded surround music titles available through DTS Entertainment, including Sting's Brand New Day, Sheryl Crow's Globe Sessions and The Eagles' Hell Freezes Over. DTS Entertainment titles are also available at many e-tailers and retailers that sell DVDs. DTS releases are compatible with all standard DVD players.

Queen take 2

Queen Editor's note: This DTS came out some 3 years ago. Now it's being re-re-released with a remastered cd. I won't buy it again...but maybe someone will buy it for the first time. Better yet....put out "Jazz" in multi-fun. Oh well what the hell, Christmas is coming right? Give it to someone......

Queen's 1975 album "A Night at the Opera" will arrive in a 30th anniversary collector's edition Nov. 22 via Hollywood Records. The original CD, best known for "Bohemian Rhapsody," features remastered audio. An accompanying DVD features a DTS 5.1 Surround Sound mix plus track-by-track commentary from Queen's original four members, including archival interviews with the late Freddie Mercury.

Beyond restored versions of the clips for "Rhapsody" and "You're My Best Friend," videos have been created for the other album tracks out of vintage live performance clips and rare photographs.

Queen's reunion tour with Paul Rodgers continues Saturday (Oct. 22) in Los Angeles and will be followed by six Japanese shows later this month and into November.

T.Rex Brought to the Big Screen in 96-24 DTS Sound

Editor's Note: Here's some exciting news for fans of T-Rex and videophiles. The Trex new encoder from DTS was recently utilized to bring an old concert performance from T-Rex to life. For those of you keeping count...this high performance dvd-video has comparable frequency response and bitrates to DVD-Audio. Peter Gabriel's recent collection of videos, "Play", was also presented in this hyper-DTS configuration. It clearly outshone all of Gabriel's SACD reissues...

TWYFORD, United Kingdom--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 2, 2005--In celebration of the launch of the T.Rex "Born to Boogie" DVD, Sanctuary Records held a premiere at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema in London, on 26 April, featuring DTS 96/24 high resolution audio playback. The eagerly awaited, special two-disc release consists of Ringo Starr's legendary 1972 film "Born to Boogie," the only two full concerts ever recorded with T.Rex, and a wealth of extra material. The screening of this epic concert's rare and sometimes unseen footage in DTS 96/24, which offers an unprecedented level of audio quality for multi-channel sound on DVD-Video, was delivered via the XD10 Cinema Media Player, DTS' latest cinema technology for high definition audio and video playback.

"DTS' unique combination of high quality surround technologies developed for home entertainment, in this case DTS 96/24, and robust cinema technology, with the DTS XD10 Cinema Media Player, makes DTS a market leader in bringing alternative content to cinemas," explained David Pope, Director of Business Development, CSS and Pre-Show at DTS.

Peter Gabriel relaunches his video collection with new multi-channel mixes OR How I learned to stop worrying about the audio and learned to love DVD-Video...

A couple of years back, Peter Gabriel released his solo works on SACD. They were all (disappointingly) encoded in single layer stereo with the exception of 2002's "Up" which was a multichannel hybrid. News came out this week of Gabriel's recollaboration with Producer Daniel Lanois to remaster all of his videos with a new generation DTS encoder. The result should sound spectacular...all 23 videos will be encoded in 96khz/24bit multi-channel audio. I generally shy away from dvd-video because they sound inferior to the most pedestrian of audio cds. In this case, Gabriel's "Play" should be an audio breakthrough and will draw significant interest from all the audiophiles out there.. read the official DTS press release here...
